African institutions launch initiatives to improve credit ratings and lower borrowing costs
African nations are taking steps to address high borrowing costs and perceived credit risks by improving financial data and establishing local rating capabilities. The African Credit Rating Agency (AfCRA), developed in collaboration with the African Union, is set to be inaugurated on October 7 in Port-Louis, Mauritius. Designed as an independent institution, AfCRA aims to provide credit risk assessments tailored to African realities to counter the perceived bias and excessive severity of global rating agencies.
Simultaneously, the African Development Bank (AfDB) has announced an initiative to strengthen sovereign credit ratings by enhancing economic data, transparency, and market information. AfDB President Sidi Ould Tah stated that inadequate data and market opacity contribute to distorted risk perceptions and high interest rates. This initiative, implemented through the African Legal Support Facility, seeks to help governments better prepare for sovereign credit assessments and bridge information gaps that currently affect the continent's access to international capital.
