African IP Summit to drive AfCFTA trade and innovation

The 7th All Africa Intellectual Property (IP) Summit is scheduled to take place in Kenya from November 11–13. Organized in collaboration with the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) Secretariat, the event aims to position intellectual property as a primary driver of Africa’s economic transformation, innovation, and global competitiveness.

The summit focuses on mainstreaming IP to support the continent’s trade, industrial, and creative economies. By strengthening IP frameworks, organizers intend to help African businesses, innovators, and creators protect their brands, inventions, and artistic works as they expand across borders. This legal certainty is expected to encourage local production and reduce reliance on imported finished goods.

Key areas of discussion include the implementation of the AfCFTA Intellectual Property Rights Protocol. The summit will address various protections, including patents, trademarks, industrial designs, copyrights, utility models, and traditional knowledge. The goal is to bridge the gap between high-level policy and the practical commercialization of ideas for entrepreneurs and small to medium-sized enterprises.
