African language integration accelerates in AI development
Efforts to integrate African languages into artificial intelligence are gaining momentum through both national initiatives and international collaborations. In Togo, the Togo AI Lab has launched the pilot phase of the ‘Voix du Togo’ project. This initiative aims to incorporate national languages into digital tools to improve citizen access to public services. The pilot phase focuses on three languages: Kabiyè, Ewe, and Moba, with the long-term goal of expanding to approximately fifty languages spoken in the country.
On a broader scale, sixty organizations, including Cassava Technologies, Google, Microsoft, and the Gates Foundation, have committed to a five-year goal to enable AI interaction in underrepresented languages. This movement seeks to allow 3.4 billion people to use AI via voice and text in their native tongues. The global strategy focuses on four key areas: creating open linguistic databases, developing progress measurement tools, building accessible models for developers, and ensuring data privacy and sovereignty. This initiative addresses the fact that most of the world's 7,000 languages lack the sufficient data required to support high-performing AI models.
