African leaders convene at UNGA 81 to address child marriage

During the 81st Session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York, African leaders and First Ladies convened to address the protection and empowerment of women and girls.

First Lady Fatoumata Bah-Barrow of The Gambia attended a high-level dinner focused on ending child marriage through political leadership, legislative reform, and strategic partnerships. The event was co-chaired by Sierra Leonean President Julius Maada Bio and included participation from Senegalese President Bassirou Diomaye Faye and his wife.

In a related recognition, Sierra Leonean First Lady Dr. Fatima Maada Bio was named ‘Iconic Woman of the Year’ at the UNGA81 Powerlist Honours. The award recognizes influential women driving change in governance, health, and gender equality. Dr. Bio was honored alongside former female heads of state from Malawi, Mauritius, and Ecuador, and dedicated the recognition to the fight against child marriage and gender-based violence.
