Kingsley Agyemang calls for dedicated African flood risk funds

Dr. Kingsley Agyemang, Member of Parliament for Abuakwa South, has called for African governments to establish legally protected, dedicated funds to manage flood risks across the continent.

Speaking to the BBC, Agyemang proposed an integrated funding model utilizing resources from government budgets, mineral revenues, corporate taxes, and development partners. He argued that while many African nations possess effective early warning systems, they often lack the financial resources and coordination necessary to act on those warnings before disasters strike.

As an insurance and risk management expert, Agyemang recommended that these funds be established through legislation and ring-fenced to prevent governments from diverting resources. Such funds would support drainage projects, flood-control infrastructure, and emergency response efforts to move away from reactionary disaster management.
