African mining regulators launch AFMRA to boost continental cooperation

Ahead of the Egypt Mining Forum 2026, African nations have launched the African Minerals Regulatory Authorities Forum (AFMRA) in Cairo. The new platform aims to strengthen regulatory cooperation, facilitate the exchange of expertise, and create a more stable environment to attract investment across the continent.

Egyptian Petroleum and Mineral Resources Minister Karim Badawi met with mining officials from Kenya and Tanzania to discuss enhancing cooperation and localizing mining industries. The discussions focused on transitioning from the export of raw materials to developing downstream industries and value-added activities within producing countries to maximize economic returns.

Yasser Ramadan, chairman of the Mineral Resources and Mining Industries Authority, emphasized that realizing Africa’s geological potential requires strong regulatory institutions and stable investment environments. Participants proposed creating a permanent technical mechanism to track mineral sources and supply chains, aiming to increase transparency and governance while respecting national sovereignty.
