African mining reforms: Ghana pushes 30% royalty share, Tanzania targets idle licences

The Ghana Chamber of Mines has called on the government to allocate at least 30 percent of mineral royalty receipts directly to mining host communities. The chamber says the share would fund infrastructure, health, education and livelihood projects, and it urged the state to formalise the small‑scale sector and improve compliance.

In Tanzania, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Minerals announced that mining licences that remain undeveloped will be revoked and reassigned to investors capable of advancing exploration and production. Officials also highlighted plans to strengthen oversight, boost local participation in the mineral value chain and preserve the country’s gemstone heritage, with the Tanzania Gemmological Centre noting its duty to “preserve the country’s gemstone wealth”.
