African nations advance scientific and technological cooperation
The Confederation of Sahel States (AES), comprising Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger, convened the second Conference of Heads of Higher Education and Research Institutions (IESR) in Ouagadougou on October 13, 2026. The meeting focused on harmonizing academic training, facilitating the mobility of students and researchers, and ensuring mutual recognition of diplomas to strengthen scientific and technological sovereignty within the region.
Separately, the Board of Directors of the Partnership for Advanced Skills in Science, Engineering, and Technology (PASET) met in Kigali, Rwanda, on October 8, 2026. During this session, representatives from several African nations—including Senegal, Kenya, Tanzania, Burkina Faso, Mozambique, Nigeria, Ghana, and Côte d’Ivoire—approved and signed the PASET Charter.
The PASET meeting also addressed doctoral training commitments, the PASET/RSIF regional fund, and the validation of the partnership's operational manual. The initiative aims to bolster institutional cooperation and advanced scientific competencies across the continent.
