African nations advance urban sanitation and waste management projects

Burkina Faso and Congo are advancing urban sanitation and waste management initiatives. In Burkina Faso, Minister of Water and Sanitation Ismaël Sombié inaugurated a fecal sludge treatment plant in Naaba Kango, near Ouahigouya. The project, implemented by the National Office of Water and Sanitation (ONEA), cost 2.2 billion FCFA. The facility includes dehydration and purification units, sedimentation basins, and a disinfection system. Beyond sanitation, the plant aims to convert dehydrated sludge into compost for soil fertilization and market gardening.

In Congo, the Minister of Urban Sanitation, Juste Désiré Mondelé, met with the Albayrak Group to discuss improving waste collection services in Brazzaville and Pointe-Noire. Ahmet Albayrak, Chairman of the Albayrak Group, announced the upcoming purchase of new equipment and vehicles to enhance the regularity and volume of waste removal in both cities. Additionally, discussions in Brazzaville touched upon urban innovation, with a summit planned for March 2027 in Kintélé.
