African nations explore AI integration for education and security

In Liberia, the University of Liberia and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) are collaborating to establish the nation’s first Master of Science in Artificial Intelligence (MSc AI) programme. Through national stakeholder consultations involving government, academia, and the private sector, the initiative aims to build human capital to support a modern, knowledge-based economy and address challenges in sectors such as agriculture, healthcare, and governance.

In Nigeria, AI expert Professor Ibrahim Adeyanju has called for the deployment of artificial intelligence to enhance national security and public policy. Speaking at the Lagos State University Research and Innovation Fair, Adeyanju emphasized that AI could assist security agencies with predictive analytics and threat detection to combat terrorism, kidnapping, and cybercrime. He noted that while AI can provide better information and situational awareness, final security decisions must remain with human professionals, and AI should inform rather than replace public accountability.
