African nations launch 5G networks amid connectivity challenges

Orange Liberia has launched its fifth-generation (5G) mobile network in Monrovia, aimed at supporting the country’s digital transformation and business growth. Orange Liberia CEO Jean Yao Marius stated the investment reflects confidence in Liberia’s future, though Deputy Minister of Information Daniel Sando noted that the nation’s internet penetration rate remains at 32.2 percent, highlighting a significant gap in access for much of the population.

In Gabon, 5G networks were introduced on October 26, with initial coverage provided by Moov Africa Gabon Telecom in Libreville, Akanda, Owendo, and Port-Gentil, and by Airtel Gabon in those areas plus Ntoum. Despite the technological upgrade, the rollout faces hurdles including unreliable electricity, fiber network gaps, and cable damage. The telecommunications regulator, ARCEP, has urged operators to improve service quality and ensure pricing is appropriate for local market conditions following consumer complaints regarding high costs and frequent outages.
