African nations monitor upcoming Israeli elections

African governments are closely observing the upcoming Israeli elections scheduled for October 27, as the results may significantly impact foreign and domestic policies across the continent. The ongoing war in Gaza has created a divide in how African nations engage with Israel, with some pursuing diplomatic measures and others maintaining security and commercial ties.

Recent polling suggests a highly contested race between Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s Likud-led coalition and a bloc of opposition parties. Neither side is currently projected to secure the 61 seats required for a majority in the 120-seat Knesset, which is expected to lead to extended coalition negotiations. The future government’s stance on the Palestinian question will likely influence Israel’s ability to maintain or expand its partnerships within Africa.

South Africa has emerged as a prominent critic, having brought a case against Israel at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) alleging violations of the 1948 Genocide Convention. While the ICJ issued provisional measures in 2024, a final ruling has not been made. Despite diplomatic tensions in some regions, many African nations continue to balance political opposition with longstanding bilateral interests in security and commerce.
