African nations push for local pharmaceutical and medical manufacturing

African nations are advocating for the expansion of local pharmaceutical and medical technology manufacturing to reduce reliance on international imports and strengthen health security.

In Namibia, the National Planning Commission emphasized that the COVID-19 pandemic highlighted the vulnerabilities of countries dependent on global supply chains. Officials stated that regional manufacturing of vaccines, diagnostics, and medical devices would serve as an engine for industrialization, job creation, and skills development. This initiative aims to move the region from being a consumer of medical products to a contributor to medical technology through increased investment in research, laboratories, and clinical trials.

Similarly, in Ghana, health officials have called for partnerships that prioritize local manufacturing, assembly, and technology transfer. During the Third China-West African Medical Expo, the Deputy Minister for Health stressed that cooperation with international partners should focus on long-term capacity building rather than just importing finished goods. There is also a push for the responsible integration of artificial intelligence in healthcare to assist with diagnostics and medical imaging, provided it complements rather than replaces human medical professionals.
