African nations seek enhanced climate finance and adaptation support
African nations are advocating for enhanced climate finance and structural changes to the global financial system during the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly. Leaders are seeking improved support for adaptation, loss and damage commitments, and relief from high borrowing costs and debt.
A recent 2026 Africa Sustainable Development Report indicates that while the continent has made measurable gains in water, energy, and industrialization, progress is hindered by financing shortfalls, infrastructure gaps, and climate shocks.
To address these gaps, the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) and Equity Group have launched the Africa Rural Climate Adaptation Finance Mechanism (ARCAFIM). This $200 million, private sector-led initiative aims to provide lending capital and technical assistance to smallholder farmers and rural businesses across Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, and Rwanda. The program intends to benefit approximately 1.5 million people, with a specific focus on supporting women and youth to strengthen regional food security.
