African passport mobility shows regional strength and global variations

Recent passport mobility data highlights varying levels of international access for African citizens. A Liberian passport now provides visa-free or simplified entry to 34 African destinations, covering approximately 64.2 percent of the continent. This regional access is significantly higher than Liberia’s global access rate of 28.8 percent. Much of this mobility is driven by ECOWAS membership, which facilitates travel to 14 of the 18 African destinations that allow visa-free entry.

In contrast, the South African passport, ranked 48th globally, allows holders to travel to 101 destinations without a pre-departure visa. While South Africa remains the fourth-strongest passport in Africa, its access has seen a slight decrease from 106 destinations in the previous year following the loss of visa-free or visa-on-arrival access to Mauritania, Nigeria, Pakistan, Kosovo, and Somalia. South Africa’s strongest regional access remains within neighboring African nations and parts of the Middle East, while Europe remains a difficult region to access without a full Schengen visa.
