African passport mobility trends and regional travel policies
Recent passport rankings and policy updates highlight shifting trends in global and African mobility. The Sierra Leonean passport is ranked 139th in the 2026 Passport Reports, providing visa-free access to 66 countries, representing 33.3% global coverage. Sierra Leoneans have significant access to the Caribbean, with 75% of destinations in that region reachable without a visa, including the Bahamas, Barbados, and Jamaica. Within Africa, the passport ranks 24th among the 54 nations, offering visa-free or simplified entry to 34 destinations.
Across the African continent, Seychelles, Mauritius, and South Africa hold the strongest passports with mobility scores of 147, 140, and 108, respectively. Efforts to increase intra-African travel continue through the African Union’s Free Movement of Persons agenda. Notable policy shifts include Ghana’s implementation of a free-visa policy for African nationals as of May 2026, and the Republic of the Congo’s announcement to remove visa requirements for all African nationals starting January 1, 2027.
