African psychiatrists discuss digital health and AI in Ethiopia

Psychiatrists from across Africa are meeting in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, to discuss how artificial intelligence and digital psychiatry can expand access to quality mental health care on the continent. The joint conference, organized by the Ethiopian Psychiatric Association and the African Psychiatric Association, is held under the theme ‘Digital Psychiatry in Africa: Leveraging AI for Accessible and Quality Mental Health Care.’

Ethiopian Health Minister Mekdes Daba emphasized that AI and digital psychiatry are increasingly vital tools for reaching patients and meeting the rising demand for mental health services. She advocated for the adoption of these technologies while maintaining technological sovereignty and using adaptive sciences tailored to Africa’s specific needs.

Atalay Alem, president of the Ethiopian Psychiatric Association, highlighted the need for stronger laws, policies, and guidelines to regulate the development and implementation of AI and digital psychiatry throughout Africa. He also noted the association's growth to 194 members through continuous professional training and its commitment to collaborating with international medical organizations.
