African Rainbow Minerals and Assore enter legal battle over Assmang control

African Rainbow Minerals (ARM) and Assore have entered a legal dispute regarding the management and strategic direction of Assmang, a major South African producer of iron ore and manganese. Assore has initiated legal proceedings challenging ARM’s authority to appoint senior executives and manage Assmang’s operations under their existing shareholders’ agreement.

ARM has rejected the claims, stating that legal advice suggests the allegations lack substantive merit. The company intends to defend itself and launch counter-proceedings to affirm its management rights and compel Assore to provide necessary information and records required for Assmang to meet its legal and regulatory obligations.

Despite the litigation, ARM maintains it will continue to manage Assmang according to its contractual rights. The joint venture, which is a 50:50 partnership, operates significant assets including the Khumani iron ore mine and the Nchwaning and Gloria manganese mines in the Northern Cape province.
