African solidarity with Palestine faces test of principle

The relationship between African nations and Palestine is being tested by current geopolitical developments. While many African governments express sympathy for the Palestinian cause, there is a growing debate regarding the consistency of their principles.

Uganda is currently preparing to participate in a proposed Gaza International Stabilization Force. This move contrasts with the actions of South Africa, which is pursuing legal action against Israel’s conduct through the International Court of Justice (ICJ).

Historically, African solidarity with Palestine is rooted in the continent’s own history of anti-colonialism and struggles for self-determination. This Pan-African commitment was shaped by leaders like Kwame Nkrumah, whose philosophy linked African independence to a broader global struggle against foreign occupation and racial domination.
