African startup ecosystems show rapid growth and deep tech potential

The African startup ecosystem is experiencing significant growth and a potential shift toward deep tech. According to the Global Startup Ecosystem Index 2026 by StartupBlink, the top ten African tech cities saw an average growth of 20.5%, roughly double the global average of 10.3%.

Lagos, Nigeria, remains the continent's leading tech hub, ranking 70th globally with a 23.2% annual increase. Cairo follows in second place, though its growth slowed to 0.7%. Cape Town has shown the most dynamic trajectory among leaders, jumping 24 places globally to rank 114th with 39% growth. Nairobi and Johannesburg also remain key players, ranking 116th and 122nd respectively.

Beyond regional growth, there is an emerging discussion regarding the diversification of African technology. While the continent has historically excelled in fintech and e-commerce, insights from events like TechBBQ suggest a need to expand into deep tech sectors such as biotechnology, quantum computing, and artificial intelligence to mirror successful European models.
