African startups face challenges distinguishing scalability from suitability

African startups often face failure despite having strong traction, significant funding, and access to large markets. While common explanations include poor execution or insufficient capital, a deeper issue exists in the distinction between scalability and suitability.

Scalability refers to a business model's ability to grow, whereas suitability concerns how well that model fits the specific people, institutions, and social conditions of a market. A venture may achieve capital approval from investors but fail to gain contextual acceptance from customers, regulators, or local communities. To build enduring businesses, founders must prioritize trust, legitimacy, and institutional alignment alongside traditional growth metrics.
