African startups face scaling challenges despite available talent and capital
African technology startups are encountering significant hurdles when attempting to scale operations from initial funding to sustainable growth. While the continent possesses ambitious entrepreneurs and solutions for critical sectors such as logistics, health, agriculture, and digital finance, a disconnect exists within the financing chain.
Key obstacles include investment funds that are too small or overly specialized, currency exchange risks, limited access to debt, and insufficient support mechanisms. These factors prevent many companies from transforming commercial potential into long-term economic actors capable of expanding across borders.
Ethiopis Tafara, Vice President of the IFC for Africa, notes that the continent does not lack talent or capital, but rather the articulation between these resources. The IFC is focusing on strategic priorities to convert institutional savings into productive investments, aiming to create sustainable employment for millions of young people as they enter the workforce.
