African swine fever detected in wild boar in Brandenburg

A new case of African swine fever (ASF) has been confirmed in a wild boar near Lunow in the Barnim district of Brandenburg, marking the first occurrence in the area in approximately three years. The Friedrich-Löffler-Institut officially verified the find, which occurred within a high-risk corridor east of the Oder dike.

In response, authorities in the neighboring Märkisch-Oderland district are urging strict adherence to existing protective measures. Officials emphasize the importance of maintaining intact fences and ensuring that gates and passages remain closed to prevent the movement of wild boar between affected areas. The public, including hikers and mushroom foragers, is requested to close any gates they pass through and to immediately report any dead wild boar found to the veterinary office.

The Barnim district administration is expected to issue a general decree by the end of the week following consultations with the state crisis center. Officials noted that current containment measures, such as fences toward Poland and neighboring districts, appear to be functioning as intended.
