African Swine Fever spreads in Philippines and India, affecting pig farms across regions

In the Philippines, African swine fever (ASF) was confirmed in several locations during July 2026. Cebu City reported 20 infected pigs, prompting a citywide cull, burial and a transport ban on live pigs and pork products. Iloilo province kept nine municipalities in a red‑zone status, while nearby areas remain under pink‑zone monitoring. In Basilan’s Lamitan City, 284 hogs died across 113 farms, with laboratory tests tracing the outbreak to Zamboanga City. Provincial authorities have imposed risk‑based movement controls and offered financial assistance to affected hog raisers.

Separately, the Indian district of Zunheboto in Nagaland saw ASF spread beyond its initial detection in early July, causing pig mortalities and significant economic losses for farmers. Veterinary officials urged stricter biosecurity, restricted animal movement, and warned against consuming pork from infected animals. The district also launched a livestock insurance scheme to compensate owners for animal deaths, though pig coverage remains paused until the outbreak eases.
