African tech initiatives target youth employment and innovation
Various initiatives are targeting youth employment and technological innovation across Africa. In Cameroon, the second Cameroon International Tech Summit (CITS 2026) focused on leveraging the digital economy to address structural unemployment. With over 120,000 graduates entering the formal market annually and only 6,000 securing traditional jobs, the summit aimed to position the country as a hub for IT outsourcing in fields like AI and data processing.
In Guinea, Rio Tinto launched the second edition of its Hackathon Future Champions in Conakry. The program is designed for students and startups less than two years old, aiming to engage 2,000 participants and collect 1,500 projects to foster local entrepreneurship and sustainable business solutions.
Additionally, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the timbuktoo MineTech Hub introduced a pre-incubation program for young entrepreneurs in the mining sector. Targeting teams in Botswana, Liberia, Malawi, Nigeria, Zambia, and Zimbabwe, the initiative seeks to develop technological solutions for mining challenges, including geological data collection and predictive analysis through artificial intelligence.
