African Telecom Regulators Call for Unified Policy Ahead of ITU Conference

At the opening of the 7th Ordinary Session of the African Telecommunications Union (ATU) Conference Preparatory Committee in Abuja, Dr. Aminu Maida, Executive Vice Chairman and CEO of Nigeria's Communications Commission (NCC), urged stronger collaboration among African regulators. He highlighted the need for coordinated positions before the International Telecommunication Union's Plenipotentiary Conference (PP‑26) in Doha, stressing spectrum harmonisation, artificial intelligence, and cybersecurity as priority issues.

During the same conference, Timothy Ashong, Director of the Regional African Satellite Communications Organisation (RASCOM), called on African nations to jointly invest in both terrestrial and satellite telecom infrastructure, particularly in border regions, to improve connectivity and close the digital divide. Both officials emphasized the importance of institutionalised cooperation and shared experience to build a robust, continent‑wide digital ecosystem.
