African Union backs Sudanese-led dialogue to end conflict

The African Union Commission has expressed support for a new Sudanese-led dialogue initiative designed to end the armed conflict in Sudan. The initiative aims to facilitate internal discussions under the supervision of an independent committee composed of Sudanese elders.

To ensure the success of the political process, the Commission emphasized that it must be inclusive, involving all civil, political, and societal stakeholders. The goal is to foster a shared national vision, preserve Sudan’s unity and national institutions, and strengthen the democratic state structure.

The initiative aligns with the African Union’s existing roadmap for Sudan. The conflict, which began in April 2023 between the military and the Rapid Support Forces, has resulted in tens of thousands of deaths and the displacement of approximately 13 million people.
