African Union demands two permanent UN Security Council seats

The African Union, through its Committee of Ten (C-10), has reaffirmed its demand for structural reform of the United Nations Security Council. During the 14th ministerial meeting in Tripoli, Libya, the committee adopted the ‘Tripoli Declaration 2026’ to strengthen diplomatic efforts for continental representation.

The proposal calls for the allocation of two permanent seats to Africa, including full privileges such as the right to veto, alongside five non-permanent seats. This would increase Africa's current non-permanent representation from three to five members.

African leaders argue these changes are necessary to correct a ‘historical injustice’ and ensure the continent has an equitable role in international decision-making regarding global peace and security. The declaration also asserts that the African Union should retain the prerogative to select candidates for these positions to ensure representation aligns with the continent's specific priorities.
