African Union launches Africa Credit Rating Agency

The African Union has officially launched the African Credit Rating Agency (AfCRA) in Mauritius. The initiative, approved by the AU in 2017, aims to strengthen the continent’s financial architecture by providing independent, technically rigorous assessments of African economies and credit risks.

AU Commission President Mahmoud Ali Youssouf stated that the agency is intended to complement, rather than replace, existing international rating agencies. The goal is to provide an additional perspective that integrates local data and specific African economic realities, which can help prevent high borrowing costs caused by assessments that fail to account for local contexts.

In response to the launch, Kenyan President William Ruto announced that Kenya is seeking to host a secondary office for AfCRA in Nairobi. Ruto, who serves as the African Union Champion for Institutional Reform, expressed interest in Kenya becoming a sovereign client of the agency to support continental economic reforms and financial independence.
