African Union launches Africa Credit Rating Agency in Mauritius

The African Union has officially launched the Africa Credit Rating Agency (AfCRA) in Port Louis, Mauritius. The agency is designed to provide independent, context-sensitive credit assessments for African sovereigns, sub-sovereigns, financial institutions, and private companies.

AfCRA aims to offer an alternative perspective to the three major global credit rating agencies—Moody’s, S&P, and Fitch—which African leaders have criticized for failing to accurately reflect the continent's economic realities. The United Nations estimates that inaccurate or context-poor credit ratings cost African economies approximately $74.5 billion annually through excessive borrowing costs and lost financing opportunities.

The agency will operate as a self-funded, independent institution with private sector participation, and its ownership rules prohibit governments from holding shares. Currently, only 32 of Africa’s 55 countries have ratings from the three major global agencies. AfCRA intends to expand coverage and use regional data and African expertise to provide more reliable analyses, helping to strengthen the continent's financial architecture and improve access to capital markets.
