African Union launches Africa Credit Rating Agency in Mauritius

The African Union, in collaboration with the African Peer Review Mechanism and the Economic Commission for Africa, has launched the Africa Credit Rating Agency (AfCRA) in Mauritius. The initiative aims to strengthen the continent’s financial sovereignty by providing independent, Africa-focused assessments of sovereign credit risk.

Officials noted that current global credit rating agencies, which control approximately 95% of the market, may not adequately reflect African economic realities. This can lead to high risk premiums; the Economic Commission for Africa estimates these excess interest payments cost the continent roughly US$75 billion annually. By incorporating local data and expertise, AfCRA seeks to provide a more accurate understanding of African economies to international investors.

Leaders emphasized that AfCRA is not intended to replace existing agencies or guarantee more favorable ratings. Instead, its goal is to offer an additional, technically rigorous perspective. Maintaining institutional independence and protecting the agency from political interference are cited as critical requirements for gaining international market confidence.
