African Union leaders call for sustainable financing for peace operations
During the 21st Extraordinary Session of the African Union Assembly in Luanda, Angola, leaders addressed the urgent need for sustainable and African-owned financing for the continent's peace and security architecture.
Ghanaian President John Dramani Mahama advocated for the accelerated capitalization of the African Union Peace Fund, supporting its $1 billion target to ensure that early warnings of conflict can be met with timely, predictable action. He also expressed support for UN Security Council Resolution 2719, which provides a framework for financing AU-led peace operations through UN assessed contributions.
Nigeria's Foreign Affairs Minister, Ambassador Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, called for innovative financing mechanisms to reduce dependence on external assistance. She noted that the AU Peace Fund has already received approximately $350.2 million in contributions, representing 87.5 percent of its original $400 million target, with the total balance exceeding $405 million. To date, roughly $39 million has been disbursed for mediation, preventive diplomacy, and peace support operations.
