African Union mediates DRC conflict amid Ituri security warnings
The African Union (AU) is intensifying mediation efforts to address the ongoing security crisis in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). AU facilitators, including former heads of state Uhuru Kenyatta, Mokgweetsi Masisi, and Sahle-Work Zewde, recently met with Corneille Nangaa, the coordinator of the Alliance Fleuve Congo (AFC/M23), in Goma to seek a peaceful resolution between the Congolese government and the politico-military group.
Parallel to these diplomatic efforts, concerns are rising regarding regional stability in the Ituri province. A Congolese political analyst has warned of potential destabilization in the Djugu territory, citing the presence of figures linked to the CRP in Kampala, Uganda, as a security risk. The analyst emphasized the need for close cooperation between Kinshasa and Kampala to prevent the security situation from deteriorating further, drawing comparisons to the M23's progression in North Kivu.
While the AU aims to establish itself as a primary actor for peace in the Great Lakes region, the effectiveness of this mediation remains uncertain, especially as previous agreements facilitated by the United States and Qatar have yet to end the armed conflict.
