African Union prioritizes water security for regional stability

The African Union is prioritizing water security as a strategic agenda item aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 6. Water is viewed as a critical catalyst for economic transformation, climate resilience, public health, and regional stability across the continent.

Despite low emissions, Africa remains highly vulnerable to climate change. The African Water Vision 2063 emphasizes that because rivers and groundwater systems cross national borders, regional cooperation is essential for sustainable management. Successful examples include the Lesotho Highlands Water Project, which facilitates cross-border water sharing between South Africa and Lesotho to support the Gauteng economic region.

Water security is also linked to gender equality, as women and children often bear the heaviest burden of water scarcity. Addressing these issues can improve livelihoods and empower women. Nationally, South Africa is implementing its National Water Action Plan to address infrastructure bottlenecks through public-private partnerships and international resource mobilization.
