The African Union (AU) held its 21st Extraordinary Session in Luanda, Angola, focused exclusively on the prevention and resolution of conflicts. The summit, convened by Angolan President João Lourenço, saw representatives from 49 of the 55 AU member states in attendance.

AU Commission Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf emphasized the need for greater accountability within the organization’s peace and security mechanisms, including the Peace and Security Council and the African Standby Force. He stressed that decisions made at summits must be effectively implemented rather than remaining mere declarations.

AU rotating chairperson Évariste Ndayishimiye called for measurable results on the ground and advocated for African nations to lead the financing of their own peace and security agendas, specifically through the AU Peace Fund. While emphasizing African ownership, the summit did not rule out international support based on mutual respect and sovereignty.

Delegates also addressed various security challenges across the continent, including terrorism, violent extremism, and unconstitutional changes of government. Zambia specifically advocated for closing the gap between early warning systems and early preventive action to stop conflicts before they escalate.
