Africa Credit Rating Agency launches in Mauritius

The African Union has officially launched the Africa Credit Rating Agency (AfCRA), the continent’s first homegrown credit rating institution. Headquartered in Port Louis, Mauritius, the agency is scheduled to begin operations on October 7, 2026.

AfCRA is designed to provide an alternative to the dominant global rating agencies—Fitch, Moody’s, and S&P Global—which African leaders have frequently accused of misjudging economic risks and issuing hasty downgrades during crises. The new agency aims to offer more balanced, context-specific assessments by utilizing African data, expertise, and insights into local economic realities, including the large informal sector.

The initiative follows nearly a decade of planning, having been endorsed by African leaders in 2018. The African Peer Review Mechanism (APRM) conducted the technical and governance framework for the agency. AfCRA will operate as an independent, private-sector-led institution funded through shareholder capital and its own operations, with a structure intended to prevent political influence.

The launch comes as African nations face significant debt challenges; annual external debt service on the continent rose from $61 billion in 2010 to $163 billion in 2024. By providing more accurate credit intelligence, the AU expects AfCRA to help improve access to capital markets and reduce the high borrowing costs that currently weigh on many African economies.
