African Union troops to withdraw from four Somali bases

African Union military forces are expected to vacate four strategic positions in Somalia’s Lower Shabelle region next week. This withdrawal is part of a broader, planned reduction of troop numbers as the mission transitions security responsibilities to Somali government forces.

The drawdown is being driven by funding pressures facing the African Union mission, though the timeline for completing the troop reduction process has reportedly been extended to December 2026. The Lower Shabelle region is considered strategically vital because it serves as a defensive shield for the capital, Mogadishu, and contains major roads linking the capital to southern Somalia.

Concerns have been raised regarding whether Somali forces possess the necessary personnel, equipment, and supplies to secure these locations. The region remains a major front in the conflict against the al-Qaida-linked militant group al-Shabaab. There are fears that a security gap could allow militants to exploit the transition and extend their foothold in the area.
