African Union warns of rising tensions between Ethiopia, Eritrea, and Egypt

The African Union Commission has expressed deep concern regarding escalating tensions between Ethiopia, Eritrea, and Egypt. In a recent statement, the Commission urged all three nations to exercise maximum restraint and avoid actions or rhetoric that could undermine regional peace and stability.

The Commission emphasized the necessity of maintaining communication channels and resolving disputes through established diplomatic means and peaceful dialogue, in accordance with the principles of the African Union's Constitutive Act. It also expressed readiness to support de-escalation efforts in coordination with the involved states.

The regional instability is driven by complex historical and political issues. Tensions between Egypt and Ethiopia center on the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam, which Egypt views as an existential threat to its water security. Meanwhile, Ethiopia and Eritrea have experienced significant diplomatic breakdowns, including the recent closure of embassies and the expulsion of diplomats. Ethiopia has also accused external forces, including Egypt and Eritrea, of supporting insurgent groups targeting government forces.
