African volleyball enters period of significant growth and international recognition

African volleyball is entering a significant phase of growth, characterized by advancements in national teams, youth development, and beach volleyball programs. This progress was discussed during meetings in Nairobi involving the International Volleyball Federation (FIVB), led by President Fabio Azevedo, and the Confederation of African Volleyball (CAVB), led by President Bouchra Hajij.

Discussions included leaders from various African volleyball zones and representatives from several nations, including Nigeria, Togo, Zimbabwe, Zambia, Senegal, Ghana, The Gambia, Cameroon, Benin, Uganda, and Kenya. The goal of these meetings is to strengthen the sport's foundations across the continent.

Recent competitive successes highlight Africa's rising international profile. Morocco secured an LA28 Olympic quota place by winning the men’s title at the 2026 CAVB Africa Beach Volleyball Championships. Egypt’s U18 teams qualified for the 2027 FIVB U19 World Championships, and The Gambia achieved a historic victory over the USA at the 2025 FIVB U18 Beach Volleyball World Championship. Looking ahead, the focus remains on expanding participation and creating pathways for athletes, particularly with the upcoming Youth Olympic Games in Dakar 2026.
