African Youth Survey 2026 Shows Rising Optimism, Demand for Jobs and New Democratic Model

The African Youth Survey 2026, conducted in March with 4,901 respondents aged 18‑24 across 16 African nations, found a notable rise in optimism. Forty‑seven percent say their country is moving in the right direction, up from 30 % in 2024, and 45 % judge the national economy as improving, up from 26 % two years earlier. While 73 % still regard democracy as the preferred system of government, 56 % say the Western‑style model does not suit Africa and call for a version rooted in African realities. The survey identified the creation of well‑paying jobs as the top priority (27 % of respondents) followed by reducing government corruption (25 %). A large majority, 76 %, view current leaders as out of touch with youth concerns, and 65 % support imposing age limits for presidents and prime ministers. The findings reflect a generation that remains committed to democratic principles but demands reforms that deliver jobs, accountability and stability.
