Africa's digital economy shifts focus toward infrastructure and frictionless payments

Africa is experiencing a significant shift toward frictionless digital payments, driven largely by a young, mobile-first population. In Kenya, mobile devices are the primary gateway to the digital economy; according to the Communications Authority of Kenya, 71.3% of consumers use mobile phones for e-commerce, far outpacing laptops or desktops.

This demand for speed and convenience is pushing fintech, telecommunications, and banking sectors to implement technologies like QR payments, contactless transactions, and biometric authentication to reduce transaction friction. Data from the Central Bank of Kenya indicates that registered mobile-money accounts reached 95.3 million by August 2026.

As the continent moves beyond simple digital adoption, the focus is shifting toward the underlying infrastructure required to scale. The next phase of growth depends on connecting complex networks of payments, identity, data, logistics, and regulation to allow commerce to operate efficiently across diverse national borders and markets.
