Africa's energy reserves offer strategic opportunity amid global volatility

Global energy security has returned to the center of geopolitical strategy, driven by volatility in the geoeconomic landscape and tensions in Iran regarding the Strait of Hormuz. This uncertainty presents a strategic opportunity for African nations to redefine their global role.

Africa holds significant resources, including over 125 billion barrels of proven oil reserves, 620 trillion cubic feet of gas, and more than 30% of the world's critical mineral reserves. Notably, the continent accounts for 70% of global cobalt production, a vital component for the energy transition and battery manufacturing.

Despite these assets, African nations face challenges such as restrictive financing criteria for long-term energy inclusion projects and a heavy reliance on imported refined fuels. To transform these resources into sustainable development, there is a call for African nations to coordinate their positions to demand fair contracts, technology transfer, and local industrialization. The Dangote refinery serves as a model for adding local value and creating employment within the continent.
