Africa's Universities and Creative Sectors Advance Next‑Generation Talent

Across the continent, African universities are overhauling curricula to stress practical problem‑solving, entrepreneurship, and multidisciplinary STEM education. Programs in engineering, computer science, biotechnology, robotics, renewable energy and artificial intelligence are expanding, while partnerships with industry aim to supply a skilled workforce for digital transformation, industrialisation, infrastructure and health innovation.

At the same time, Africa’s creative industries—advertising, music, fashion, film, gaming and design—are contributing increasingly to national economies, exemplified by South Africa’s creative sector accounting for about 3.9% of GDP. Industry leaders highlight a gap between creation and long‑term value capture, citing limited investment, weak intellectual‑property protection and insufficient commercial‑isation skills. Calls are growing for stronger education, funding and ownership frameworks to ensure creators retain and grow the wealth generated by their ideas.
