Africa's youth population presents major development opportunities and challenges
Africa remains the world's youngest region, presenting both significant opportunities and challenges for sustainable development. According to the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) 2024 Africa Demographic Opportunity Atlas, approximately 60 percent of the continent's population is under the age of 25.
United Nations projections suggest that if current demographic trends continue, one in three young people in the world will be African by 2050. While this youth bulge is a major driver for potential economic growth, experts warn that systemic issues such as unemployment, lack of education, and limited access to finance are driving mass migration toward Europe.
In discussions surrounding International Youth Day, Moussa Hissein Moussa of the Africa Without Borders movement and Dr. Abdoul Maguidou Sawadogo highlighted that addressing these social and economic gaps through new educational and employment policies is essential to transforming this demographic potential into a tangible opportunity for the continent.
