Africell Sierra Leone launches fifth Freetown Marathon with new 42.2km race

Africell Sierra Leone has officially launched the fifth edition of the Freetown Africell Marathon. A major development for the event is the introduction of a full 42.2-kilometre race, which will be held for the first time.

Scheduled for December 6, 2026, the competition will feature four distinct categories: 5 kilometres, 10 kilometres, a 21.1-kilometre half marathon, and the new 42.2-kilometre full marathon. The event aims to promote healthy lifestyles, develop local sporting talent, and establish itself as a significant fixture on Sierra Leone’s sporting calendar.

The launch event included representatives from various sporting and community organizations, including the National Olympic Committee and Commonwealth Games Association of Sierra Leone, the Sierra Leone Athletics Association, and the Sierra Leone Sports Writers Association. Africell CEO Shadi Gerjawi stated that the marathon was created to bring people together through sport and provide a platform for local athletes to showcase their abilities.
