Afrikaner refugee family denied U.S. re-entry after South Africa medical trip

An Afrikaner refugee family consisting of two adults and two minor children has been denied re-entry into the United States after returning to South Africa for medical reasons. The family had arrived in the U.S. under a resettlement programme designed for South African minorities facing persecution.

Approximately two weeks after their arrival in the U.S., members of the family became ill. Seeking medical care through their existing South African medical aid, the family traveled back to South Africa. However, upon attempting to return to the United States, they were stopped at the airport because they lacked the necessary travel documents or visas.

The family is currently staying with friends in South Africa. According to the International Refugee Assistance Project, returning to a country of perceived persecution can jeopardize refugee status, as it may suggest the individual no longer fears danger in that region. U.S. authorities generally require refugees to obtain explicit permission before traveling outside the country.
