AFSA chief outlines insolvency system reforms in Australia

The chief executive of the Australian Financial Services Authority (AFSA) addressed the ARITA online forum, emphasizing the principle of collective stewardship in the personal insolvency system. He highlighted how regulators, practitioners, creditors and debtors must each fulfil their responsibilities to maintain confidence in Australia’s credit system.

The speech covered three main points: how AFSA has responded to stakeholder feedback and strengthened its administration; the regulator’s priorities for the 2026‑27 period, including expectations for practitioners; and the opportunity presented by the Productivity Commission inquiry into reducing barriers to business dynamism. The inquiry is seen as a chance for the government to align personal and corporate insolvency frameworks and to ease frictions for debtors, creditors and regulators.

AFSA stressed that registered trustees act as gatekeepers of the insolvency system, and that trust and integrity are essential for fair treatment of creditors and honest fresh starts for debtors. The address called for continued collaboration to build a stronger, more representative insolvency profession.
