Aftenposten faces scrutiny over paid privacy opt-out

A debate has emerged regarding Aftenposten’s digital subscription model, which requires users to either consent to data sharing with advertising partners or pay an additional 39 NOK per month. Critics argue that while the newspaper claims to collect only non-sensitive data, algorithms can derive sensitive information such as health, economy, and relationship status from reading patterns.

It is noted that a free option to refuse tracking exists within mobile apps due to Apple’s regulations, suggesting the paid barrier is a choice made by the publisher. The Norwegian Data Protection Authority (Datatilsynet) has opened an investigation following more than 40 complaints, though Schibsted is currently continuing its operations.
