Agapanthus care: protecting potted plants from frost and rot
To ensure the survival of potted agapanthus during winter, gardeners should take specific precautions against frost and water accumulation. As temperatures approach 0 °C, it is recommended to move pots to a frost-free location, ideally maintained between 5 °C and 10 °C. While some varieties can tolerate brief periods of lower temperatures, the lack of thermal inertia in containers makes roots highly vulnerable to freezing.
Beyond temperature, managing moisture is critical. Autumn rains can lead to stagnant water at the bottom of containers, which causes root rot due to lack of oxygen. To prevent this, gardeners should ensure drainage holes are clear, remove saucers that collect water, and consider elevating pots using supports to allow air circulation and proper drainage. Grouping pots together can also create a protective microclimate against the wind.
