AGCOM flags AI risks to Italian news pluralism

Italy’s communications regulator AGCOM, in its 2026 annual report, warns that artificial‑intelligence systems are reshaping the news ecosystem. Recommendation algorithms, search‑engine ranking and generative AI summaries can limit users’ exposure to diverse sources, undermining pluralism. After a complaint from the Italian newspaper federation, AGCOM has asked the European Commission to examine whether Google’s AI Overviews and AI Mode comply with the Digital Services Act’s transparency and risk‑mitigation rules, and has created a standing forum with Google, other platforms and Italian publishers to address copyright, AI and pluralism issues.
